About SALS

Stem Adventures Lab School (SALS) is a parallel event completely devoted to bringing science to a community that is otherwise highly focused on tourism. Empowering children from Galapagos to follow the path of local models, demonstrating how STEM careers can boost their capability to make positive changes. SALS is aimed at primary and secondary school students, along with members of various volunteer clubs from all over the Galapagos Islands. SALS includes several activities such as:

  • Experimental workshops.

  • Theoretical courses.

  • Practical experiments.

  • Vocational talks

SALS 2023

In the SALS 2023 edition, 30 children from various schools actively participated in interactive STEM workshops, while more than 80 immersed themselves in a seminar where they had the opportunity to interact with young researchers and find inspiration to embark on advanced scientific studies. Impact measurement was carried out through brief surveys before and after the workshops, evaluating the knowledge acquired and the interest generated. One of the most notable impacts was evident in the female participants, whose interest in this type of activities experienced a notable increase, reaching up to 70%.

SALS 2024

In the next edition of SALS 2024, it is anticipated to achieve a broader scope. With a greater number of volunteers in the project, the experimental workshop sessions will be expanded, and a larger career talk event will be organized. In addition, simultaneous activities will be carried out on Isabel Island, with the aim of successfully replicating the impact obtained in Puerto Ayora, seeking to reach more remote populations with the same enthusiasm.

SALS 2026

The SALS 2026 (Student Association for Light and Science) will host Nanoescuela Galápagos 2026, a scientific outreach initiative aligned with the NSSY 2026 conference and the IMPACT-YT project, aimed at bringing science closer to young students in the Galápagos Islands and fostering their interest in STEM fields—particularly physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology—through hands-on, interactive activities. Within this framework, experimental laboratory sessions will be conducted in collaboration with students from local educational institutions on May 19, 20, 21, and 22 across the islands of San Cristóbal and Santa Cruz. These activities will be complemented by specialized workshops and opportunities to interact with researchers, thereby promoting the social appropriation of knowledge and the development of early scientific vocations in a strategically significant insular context.
